Dion Charles was on target as Northern Ireland ended a dismal UEFA European Championship qualifying campaign with victory over Denmark.

Charles, who had scored twice in a 3-0 win in San Marino back in March, netted his third goal on the international stage, adding to an earlier strike from Isaac Price to give Michael O'Neill's side a modicum of respect as they finished 5th in Group H.

The Danes boasted a central defence consisting of Crystal Palace's Joachim Andersen and Barcelona's Andreas Christensen, but Charles managed to slot beyond Kasper Schmeichel from close range with nine minutes to play at Windsor Park.

Bolton teammate Eoin Toal was also involved, helping his side to a clean sheet in what was only his third cap for the senior side.

Elsewhere, Carlos Mendes Gomes made his international debut for Guinea-Bissau as they won 1-0 in a CAF World Cup qualifier against Djibouti.

Mendes Gomes played 73 minutes at the Cairo International Stadium in Egypt, as his nation moved into second place behind favourites Egypt.

There wasn't much to report for Zac Ashworth, however, as he once again missed out through injury as Wales U21 were beaten 2-1 by their Denmark counterparts in a UEFA European Under-21 Championship qualifier in Newport.

The international break comes to a close on Tuesday, with Josh Sheehan hoping to be involved as Wales host Turkey, while Conor Carty is in contention for Republic of Ireland U21 as they welcome Italy U21.
