George Johnston is backing Bolton to build on their draw at Ipswich Town, whilst admitting there is plenty of improvement still to make.

After an impressive showing during pre-season, Johnston held off competition from Jack Iredale to start at Portman Road on Saturday and completed 90 minutes as Wanderers took a point on the opening day of the new campaign.

Aaron Morley had put the visitors ahead from the penalty spot on 25 minutes, only for Lee Evans to strike seven minutes before the break to earn Town a share of the spoils.

Speaking after the game, Johnston felt the result was one which can be used as a springboard for upcoming fixtures and said attention will now turn to the training ground and preparation for next weekend's home clash with Wycombe Wanderers.

"It was a good point," Johnston told OfficialBWFC on YouTube. "There's a lot of positives to take but also some stuff we can work on.

"Being the first game, away from home in front of a good crowd, it's always going to be difficult but I think we defended really well.

"In possession we could improve massively but we know what we need to work on going into next week.

"We thought we were on top in the first 30 minutes. We knew they were going to start fast so it was just how we countered that.

"Getting a penalty and Aaron putting it away, I think we just built in confidence from that until their goal, which we conceded from a set-piece.

"That was disappointing and rocked us a bit but we got back in at half-time, came together again and came back out. It's a good point at the end of the day.

"There were some very tired legs in the changing room but this team will run through brick walls for each other. Everyone has got each other's back and we just defended for our lives today because we were up against good opposition.

"That's what was needed but moving forward we know where we need to improve."
