Bolton are on the lookout for a new academy leader after it was confirmed manager Mark Litherland has departed the club.

Litherland, who linked up with Wanderers in August 2020 soon after Ian Evatt's appointment as first-team boss, succeeded the popular Jimmy Phillips at Lostock and guided the under-18s side to 5th and 6th-placed finishes in the Youth Alliance over the past two campaigns.

Academy Operations Manager Andy Watkins will fill the void on a temporary basis until a replacement is found, with the Trotters confirming the news in a statement released on Tuesday.

The statement, posted at, read: "Bolton Wanderers can confirm that Mark Litherland has today left his position as Head of Academy to pursue other opportunities.

"The club's Board, manager Ian Evatt and Chief Executive Officer Neil Hart would like to place on record their thanks to Mark for his work over the last two seasons and wish him all the best for the future.

"Wanderers will very shortly begin the process of recruiting a new Academy Director to head the club's youth section.

"Academy Operations Manager Andy Watkins will act as operational lead for the Academy during the interim period and liaise closely with senior football and club staff until an appointment is made."
