Bolton are said to be showing an interest in Tom Barkhuizen, who will become a free agent when his contract at Preston North End comes to an end on June 30.

Barkhuizen, who has spent the past five-and-a-half years at Deepdale, scored 38 goals in 209 games for the Lilywhites but hasn't figured since coming off injured in a Championship clash at Swansea City in January.

According to a report by journalist Alan Nixon, Wanderers would face competition from both Derby County and newly-promoted Rotherham United for the signature of the 28-year-old, who has also attracted the attention of Belgian champions Union Saint-Gilloise after they secured a place in next season's UEFA Europa Conference League.

Barkhuizen began his career at Blackpool, signing youth forms in May 2009, before going on to make his senior debut in a League Cup tie at Milton Keynes Dons in August 2010.

After a spell on loan at Hereford United, he would later play alongside current Wanderers manager Ian Evatt, before further loans at Fleetwood Town and Morecambe culminated with a permanent switch to the Shrimps in the summer of 2015.

Two years later, he was on the move again, stepping up two tiers to join Preston, where his stay will come to a close next month after boss Ryan Lowe opted no to offer a new deal to the forward.
