Kieran Lee will undergo surgery to shave a heel spur on Tuesday, although the duration of his absence isn't expected to be as long as initially feared.

Lee is understood to have been playing through the pain barrier for quite some time but Bolton's medical team was forced into action last Saturday when the midfielder was replaced after just 20 minutes in their 3-2 victory at Oxford United.

The 33-year-old saw a specialist this past week to determine whether or not an operation, which came with a likely three-month spell on the sidelines, could be delayed until the summer, but Lee has been advised to go under the knife immediately and Trotters boss Ian Evatt admits he could have his player back in action by the start of April.

"He's going to have an operation on Tuesday but it's not as lengthy as we thought it was going to be," Evatt told the Manchester Evening News.

"He should be returning by, I would think, the beginning of April. I think four to six weeks is the aim so it's quite good.

"He'll be someone fresh and we've got Kacha [Elias Kachunga] and Izzy [Lloyd Isgrove] progressing really well. It's a really good squad."
