Ian Evatt believes Bolton's COVID-enforced break has put a spring back in their stride and admits there is plenty to look forward to in the January transfer window.

Wanderers, who hadn't taken to the field in three weeks prior to their outing at Rotherham United, were beaten 2-1 at the AESSEAL New York Stadium on Saturday after a brace from Michael Smith condemned the Trotters to defeat.

Eoin Doyle, who is a subject of speculation linking him with a move to Ireland, was on target in what could prove to be his final game for the Trotters and, speaking after the game, Evatt said he couldn't be prouder of his patched-up squad for pushing the League One leaders all the way.

"I'm proud of the football club again today," Evatt told OfficialBWFC on YouTube.

"We've got beat and that's never acceptable for Bolton. We're expected to win games and want to but considering the condition these boys are in, have been this week and what they've been through the last few weeks - and with all the injuries before then - it doesn't get any tougher than this and I thought we were more than competitive.

"We had two huge chances to equalise at the end and arguably deserved something out of the game.

"We had one recognised midfield player available and that was young George (Thomason). We had a young player, a centre-back and a centre-forward in midfield against a team who are high energy and high action in midfield.

"They have difficult players to play against but I thought we were outstanding. Our game plan was good, it was solid and we did everything right bar get the equaliser at the end.

"There's lots to look forward to and lots to be positive about. We've got a really big January coming up and plans are in place.

"It's amazing that we're in this position. Almost two years ago this club nearly went out of business and now we're talking about bringing in assets to make the squad stronger and better. That's credit to the board, credit to Sharon (Brittan) and credit to the fans who have paid their hard-earned money to watch us, buy tickets and buy merchandise.

"It's also down to hard work behind the scenes at the club - the commercial department, finance department. We've got a lot of work to do but there's lots to look forward to and I'm immensely proud of our club today."
