Bolton will travel to Hartlepool United in January after the clubs were paired together in the Papa John's Trophy Round of 16 draw.

After topping their group with victories over Port Vale, Liverpool U21 and Rochdale, Wanderers advanced through from the first knockout round this past Tuesday by beating Fleetwood Town at the University of Bolton Stadium.

Pools, meanwhile, finished second in a group also consisting of Carlisle United, Everton U21 and Morecambe, and booked their place at this stage with a stunning 3-0 victory at Sheffield Wednesday.

Bolton and Hartlepool have never met in any previous iteration of the Papa John's Trophy, although they have faced off on eight occasions in other competitions - with the Trotters winning four of those (D2 L2).

Their most recent clash came in a League Cup 1st round tie in August 1998 when Nathan Blake netted a hat-trick in a 3-0 Bolton win at Victoria Park, as Colin Todd's side progressed 4-0 on aggregate following victory at the Reebok Stadium a fortnight prior.

The tie is scheduled to take place in the week commencing January 3, 2022.
