Josh Sheehan could be sidelined into next season after scans revealed he suffered a ruptured anterior cruciate ligament in Wednesday's defeat at Stockport County.
Sheehan received treatment following a seemingly innocuous-looking challenge shortly before half-time at Edgeley Park, before being replaced in added time after initially attempting to play through the problem.
The 26-year-old had only recently recovered from a back complaint which had prevented him from representing Wales in their final World Cup qualifiers, and manager Ian Evatt confirmed the extent of the blow following the Trotters' game at Wycombe Wanderers on Saturday.
"Josh Sheehan has got a ruptured ACL which will keep him out for nine months," Evatt told OfficialBWFC on YouTube.
"It's devastating news. I'm devastated for Josh but he'll get the club's full support, our full support and the support of the fans who will wish him a speedy and good recovery."
