Ian Evatt hopes a two-week break from league competition will give his Bolton players the time they need to rediscover their winning form.

John Marquis scored the only goal as Wanderers were beaten at Portsmouth on Saturday, extending their winless run to five matches - four of which they have lost without scoring a goal.

With back-to-back cup ties against Rochdale and Stockport County on the horizon before a league clash with Crewe Alexandra in a fortnight, Evatt hopes to use the games as an opportunity for his players to take to the field without the usual pressures.

"It's really frustrating," Evatt told OfficialBWFC on YouTube. "We keep using that word, don't we?

"I thought we were the better team in the first-half. We had the better chances and looked comfortable. Then, second-half, we concede such a poor goal from a throw-in and it's another mistake.

"Joel (Dixon) has been excellent for us. Mistakes happen but, after that, we have to show more spirit, fight and desire. Not out of possession, but in possession.

"You have to keep wanting the ball and not go under because we're losing again, not hide from the ball.

"We can't afford to keep going long because we're not build for that. We have to play the way we play and do that with quality, intensity and tempo.

"Because of the run we're on and the lack of confidence, we looked like we just went hiding and even then we still had some moments.

"We're in an awful run of form. We've had a lot of tough fixtures but we've got a two-week break from the league now so we have to regroup, refresh and go again.

"We're hurting, we're lacking confidence and belief, and we have to build the players back up again. We've got a two-week break from the league so we have to win our cup matches and focus on getting back to ourselves and on that winning trail.

"I'm not going to stand here and make excuses but it's there for all to see - we have got injuries. I'm bringing on defenders to try and give us some impetus and energy. I had no front players to make changes.

"It's just the way it goes for you on these type of runs. I'm not going to feel sorry for myself, we just need to be better and we need to focus on getting ourselves back to where we were prior to Sheffield Wednesday."
