Stockport County have completed the surprise signing of Bolton captain Antoni Sarcevic, who has signed a two-and-a-half year deal at Edgeley Park.

Sarcevic, who joined Wanderers on a free transfer from Plymouth Argyle in July 2020, had featured 17 times in the early part of this season but was dropped to the substitutes' bench on his return to Home Park this past Tuesday.

Rumours surfaced on social media throughout Friday morning that the 29-year-old had been involved in a war of words with manager Ian Evatt, who praised his departing midfielder for the efforts he has made during his time at the University of Bolton Stadium.

"He did a terrific job to help us secure promotion and then gain an early foothold in League One this time around," Evatt told bwfc.co.uk.

"This is a new challenge for him we wish him every success in the future.

"We believe we still have excellent competition for places in the midfield area and this also allows us to look ahead and potentially strengthen the squad in January where we feel necessary if we can."

Following Sarcevic's departure, Wanderers have confirmed Ricardo Santos will take the captain's armband, with Eoin Doyle remaining as vice-captain despite similar reports of a falling out with Evatt.
