Ian Evatt will use Tuesday's Papa John's Trophy tie against Liverpool U21 as an opportunity to give minutes to players he deems most in need.

Having beaten Port Vale in their opening group fixture back in August, Wanderers can book their place in the knockout stages with victory over the Young Reds at the University of Bolton Stadium, and has already revealed he plans to field an experienced side.

The Trotters boss has confirmed Matt Gilks will start ahead of Joel Dixon in goal, with the 39-year-old playing behind a back-four of Liam Gordon, Alex Baptiste, Will Aimson and Harry Brockbank.

That means Declan John, George Johnston and Ricardo Santos will all be afforded breaks ahead of Saturday's game against Sheffield Wednesday, while Gethin Jones will be given extra time to recover from the dead leg that forced him off at half-time against Shrewsbury Town last time out.

With Andrew Tutte missing following hamstring surgery, Evatt may opt to start MJ Williams. Should he decide to give the midfielder a break, however, George Thomason and Josh Sheehan will be in contention, as will Brandon Comley - who is eligible to feature in the competition despite being omitted from Wanderers' squad for league fixtures.

Nathan Delfouneso, Amadou Bakayoko and Elias Kachunga are all vying for a place in attack in the event that Eoin Doyle is given the night off, while Mitchell Henry is set to be included in the squad after impressing in a cameo role against Port Vale earlier in the season.

Adam Senior and Jay Fitzmartin would likely have been utilised under normal circumstances, but the two academy products currently find themselves out on youth loans at Ashton United and Stalybridge Celtic, respectively.

Bolton Wanderers: from: Gilks, Dixon, John, Santos, Johnston, Aimson, Brockbank, Baptiste, Gordon, Colvin, Williams, Sheehan, Sarcevic, Afolayan, Lee, Isgrove, Thomason, Comley, Conway, Delfouneso, Doyle, Bakayoko, Kachunga, Henry
