Lloyd Isgrove will be forced into sitting out Bolton's game at Charlton Athletic on Tuesday under protocol outlined in The FA's Concussion Guidelines.
Isgrove, who departed the field at the Stadium of Light soon after the hour on Saturday, suffered a cut to his head following a collision with Sunderland's Dennis Cirkin - who also left the action minutes later.
Both players are understood to be recovering well from the clash, with Wanderers boss Ian Evatt revealing Isgrove will be given adequate time to heal.
"It was a really nasty clash of heads," Evatt told OfficialBWFC on YouTube.
"Both players innocently went for the ball and Lloyd came off worse. It's a nasty cut and you could hear the impact.
"I saw the cut straight away and knew it was a bad one. He's okay now but he'll be out with the concussion protocol."
The FA's Concussion Guidelines, which consist of six stages, will prevent Isgrove from returning to contact training until the tail end of next week, potentially also putting his involvement in next Saturday's home fixture with Shrewsbury Town in doubt.
