Sam Purkiss will referee Saturday's Sky Bet League One fixture between Sunderland and Bolton at the Stadium of Light.

Wanderers go into the game on the back of a 2-0 defeat at home to Rotherham United last Saturday, while the Black Cats were 2-0 winners at Wigan Athletic in the Carabao Cup this past Tuesday.

Purkiss, who will take charge of the game, has officiated eight matches so far this season - issuing 29 yellow cards and two red.

His most recent outing was on September 18, when he was the man in the middle for Tranmere Rovers' 2-0 victory over Salford City in League One. The London official brandished four yellow cards at Prenton Park, as well as issuing straight red cards to City's Ibou Touray and Rovers' Jay Spearing.

Purkiss' last match in charge of Bolton was on January 30, when they ran out 2-0 winners over Leyton Orient in a League Two clash at the University of Bolton Stadium. He kept his cards in his pocket on that occasion.

The last time he refereed a Sunderland fixture was in October 2020, as they beat Gillingham 2-0 in a League One encounter at the MEMS Priestfield Stadium. Two players were cautioned that afternoon, while Gills forward Alex MacDonald was shown a straight-red card.
