Ian Evatt was in positive spirits following Bolton's goalless draw with Burton Albion, admitting his team's performance far outweighed the final result.

Wanderers were in dominant mood against the Brewers, doing everything but score and, yet, when they did, it was ruled out for offside.

Speaking after the game, Evatt could have been forgiven for criticising referee Joshua Smith and his assistants, but instead opted to lavish praise upon his players.

"We did score but unfortunately it was disallowed," Evatt told OfficialBWFC on YouTube.

"I'd rather speak about how proud I am of the team. I thought we were absolutely brilliant in every department.

"I think we've shown the country what a good team we are and that Bolton are on their way back. That's the most important thing."

Evatt was shown a yellow card by referee Smith during the course of the game and he believes the time is right for officials to receive help in the form of VAR, saying Wanderers would have benefitted on this occasion as Kieran Lee's first-half goal would have been allowed to stand.

"It's a goal," he said. "There's no other view.

"It's a goal and they have played the game by appealing, but we need to be stronger than that and the official need to be stronger.

"There's an argument at every level that we should have VAR. There's so much at stake and enough money in football to have consistency from top to bottom and if we'd had VAR tonight we'd have had a goal in the first-half and a penalty at the end, too.

"It's a penalty and sometimes because it's the 89th minute and it's all us, the referees don't really want to give big decisions at that stage. But whether it's minute one or minute 89, a foul is a foul and we should have had a penalty.

"The officials have got a difficult job. It's tough refereeing games and people do make mistakes, so I'd rather concentrate on how we played and our performance, what we did on national television. I'm super proud of all of them.

"How can you not be impressed with that? I think we've dominated from start to finish. Burton are a team who have had successful results so far this season but we've had 74% possession and 22 shots against a low-block.

"When teams play so deep it's critical you take one of those chances. You're not going to create lots and lots but tonight we did and just didn't take one of them.

"Back to front I'm so proud of them all. I thought they were absolutely amazing. It was one of our best performances under me - I'd go that far.

"We're a good team. Our fans were excellent, it was a great atmosphere and for whatever reason we just didn't get it our way, but if we keep playing like that we'll win a lot more than we lose.

"It was such a one-sided game and if it was a boxing match the referee would have stopped it."
