Ian Evatt will have a threadbare squad to select from as Bolton host Port Vale in the Papa John's Trophy on Tuesday evening.

Not withstanding any transfer deadline day business, the Wanderers boss has just 18 recognised senior outfield options available to him - a total which includes the out-of-favour Brandon Comley and academy graduate Adam Senior.

Despite conducting the majority of his transfer dealings early in the summer window, Evatt has seen limited numbers drop in recent weeks and even more so in the aftermath of their weekend defeat at Cambridge United.

Kieran Lee missed the trip to the Abbey Stadium after picking up a groin injury in training at the back end of last week, and the club are understood to be awaiting the results of scans before the extent of the problem is known.

Ali Crawford is yet to feature this season and may have been drafted in as a potential replacement in midfield, but he is set to complete a move away from the University of Bolton Stadium by linking up with Scottish Premiership side St Johnstone on a half-season loan.

Josh Sheehan will also be unavailable for the next two games after being called into the Wales squad for upcoming World Cup qualifiers, meaning Andrew Tutte or George Thomason could be set for surprise appearances.

Elias Kachunga will start, likely giving Eoin Doyle the night off, while Nathan Delfouneso may also be given a starting role as Wanderers continue to go without the services of Xavier Amaechi (foot) and Amadou Bakayoko (calf).

Will Aimson recently returned to training after missing the entirety of the campaign thus far with a groin problem, so Evatt looks set to continue to choose any two of Ricardo Santos, George Johnston and Alex Baptiste in central defence.

Bolton Wanderers: from: Gilks, Dixon, Jones, John, Santos, Johnston, Brockbank, Baptiste, Gordon, Senior, Colvin, Williams, Sarcevic, Afolayan, Tutte, Isgrove, Thomason, Comley, Fitzmartin, Delfouneso, Doyle, Kachunga
