Ian Evatt once again praised the character of his players, after Bolton came from behind to beat Port Vale in the Papa John's Trophy.

Having taken a 28th-minute lead through Eoin Doyle, Wanderers trailed at the break after Tom Conlon and David Amoo found a way through for the visitors.

The Trotters got back on level terms within nine minutes of the restart through Nathan Delfouneso, before substitute Oladapo Afolayan struck the winner with 13 minutes to play.

Speaking after the game, Evatt admitted he was disappointed with the nature of Port Vale's first-half goals but said the overall display of his team made their victory merited.

"It was a difficult game," Evatt told OfficialBWFC on YouTube.

"It was tough. It always is against them. It was a physically demanding game but the lads, in the second-half, stood up to it much better and I thought our second and third goals were as good as you'll see.

"The way we played from back to front. We had more cutting-edge in the final third - we asked the players for that following Saturday - and it was a good win.

"They're a good side and hard to play against. Darrell (Clarke) has got them well organised and they're always competitive, so we had to be at our best at times.

"As I said, the second and third goals in particular, the way we broke the line of play through them was excellent.

"We started great. The first 20 minutes, I thought we were fantastic. Then we seemed to lose a bit of belief and they came into it strongly.

"Their goals were poor to concede but this group has lots of character and they've shown it in the second-half to come back and win a game.

"We knew there was more to come in the second-half but they're a good team. They are really difficult to play against, they've got some very good players and we had to be at our best to get the win.

"Our first goal was a counter-press, which is what Lloyd (Isgrove) is very good at. Not only that, but his final pass decision and execution was excellent, then Doyle took his chance.

"The second and third were flowing, passing moves culminating in good finishes. I'm delighted."
