Ian Evatt was satisfied with Bolton's performance against Wigan Athletic and admits he won't dwell on a penalty shootout defeat.

After playing out a goalless draw at the DW Stadium, it was Latics who progressed to round three of the Carabao Cup after Kieran Lee and Nathan Delfouneso missed from 12 yards.

Speaking after the game, Evatt acknowledged some of his players weren't quite at their usual standards due to a lack of playing time in the early stages of the season and says focus will immediately switch to Saturday's league clash at Cambridge United.

"It was a tight game with not a lot in it," Evatt told OfficialBWFC on YouTube.

"I thought we probably had the better chances - Dapo (Afolayan) in the first-half and Gethin (Jones) in the second - but there wasn't a lot in it.

"It was nervy, it was tight. We made a lot of changes and sometimes we lacked a bit of flow but the lads competed great. I'm proud of them.

"A penalty shootout is a penalty shootout. We were on the right side of one against Barnsley and the wrong side tonight, but there's a bigger picture here and we must now go to Cambridge and win on Saturday.

"It was a derby and was going to be tight. They mostly are. We've come here, competed and haven't lost the game. We've lost on penalties which is disappointing but we'll dust ourselves off and go again.

"We've got a good squad of players and even with making changes we've played well in spells. The fluidity at times wasn't quite there and there was some fatigue because they've lacked minutes but we've given it our best shot, given it the best we can. We've lost on penalties and that's the harsh realities of football.

"We apologise to our wonderful fans who have travelled for not getting it done but we've done our very best and now we'll focus on Saturday."
