Elias Kachunga has been pencilled in for a start against Port Vale in the Papa John's Trophy, with Ian Evatt happy to be patient over the forward's fitness levels.

Kachunga joined Wanderers on August 6 following his release by Sheffield Wednesday and has made three substitute appearances in his brief time at the University of Bolton Stadium, with the lack of a pre-season meaning his on-field minutes have been limited.

The 29-year-old has made a positive impact on supporters with his early displays, prompting calls for him to be involved more heavily, but Evatt says the August 31 fixture against Vale is likely to be when Kachunga receives his first start.

"It is a tough one because of the magnitude of the games we have got coming up," Evatt told the Manchester Evening News.

"The hard thing for him is that it is a condensed fixture list at this stage of the season, so we are not doing a lot of training - so his fitness is not increasing other than with game time and doing bits and bobs in between.

"Obviously there is the Papa John's Trophy coming up, which we have earmarked for Kacha, definitely the Port Vale one, for him to play 90 and then hopefully he won't be far away.

"For now, he is fine coming on and impacting the game for 20-30 minutes."
