Knockout football returns to the University of Bolton Stadium on Tuesday as Bolton host Barnsley in the first round of the Carabao Cup.

Having opened their season with an entertaining 3-3 draw at home to Milton Keynes Dons this past Saturday, Wanderers will be looking to arrest a dismal run of form in a cup competition which they have departed at this stage in five of the last six seasons.

Aside from a 2-1 victory at Crewe Alexandra in 2017, the Trotters have failed to make it beyond the first hurdle since 2014 - when they needed extra-time to eventually beat Bury 3-2 at Macron Stadium.

Bolton have an excellent recent record against Barnsley, against whom they are unbeaten in their last 12 meetings, but the Tykes are an entirely different prospect to previous clashes after finding themselves within touching distance of promotion to the Premier League last term.

Ian Evatt had been tipped to make a number of changes for the tie but now looks likely to stick with a strong team, with slight alterations made in order to keep players fit and fresh ahead of a weekend trip to AFC Wimbledon.

After becoming the first Wanderers outfield player to feature in every minute of each league game for the first time since 1989/90 last season, Ricardo Santos was an unused substitute last time out after injury and a period of self-isolation with COVID-19 severely disrupted his pre-season.

Evatt has confirmed Santos will start against Barnsley, as will Kieran Lee after his pre-season preparations were also hampered by time spent in isolation.

Will Aimson is struggling with a groin injury and will not be rushed into first-team action, while Declan John will sit out as a precaution after picking up a knock against MK Dons that isn't expected to keep him sidelined going into the weekend.

John's absence is likely to provide either Harry Brockbank or Liam Gordon an opportunity to impress, with both players having performed superbly well when called upon in recent friendlies.
