Bolton could be without Xavier Amaechi for the opening month of the campaign after scans revealed he has fractured a bone in his right foot.
Amaechi, who recently joined Wanderers on loan from German club Hamburg until January, limped out of a recent pre-season friendly against Preston North End and left the stadium in Leyland on crutches and wearing a protective boot.
The 20-year-old saw a specialist in London on Monday and Trotters boss Ian Evatt confirmed the midfielder had fractured a metatarsal.
"The latest is he will have surgery this week to repair a fractured metatarsal," Evatt told The Bolton News.
There had been some concern that a prolonged absence could force Evatt back into the transfer market, with the manager adding: "We are obviously one light now in that position and we may be a tad light there anyway, so we're looking but we're not going to rush into things. We have to make sure it's right."
