Bolton Wanderers Have Transfer Embargo Lifted

Five-and-a-half years after sanctions were imposed, Bolton have had restrictions on player transfers lifted by the EFL.

Since being placed under a transfer embargo on Christmas Eve in 2015, Wanderers have crumbled, fallen into administration and spent last season in the fourth tier for only the second time in their history.

Despite claims from previous owner Ken Anderson that the club had emerged from an embargo in September 2017, his words were never officially proven due to the league's stance on confidentiality - opting not to name individual clubs or reveal explicit reasons as to why such bans had been issued.

That has all changed, however, with EFL member clubs voting in June 2021 to amend regulations that would therefore allow the league body to publicly publish a list of those finding themselves under such restrictions.

The first such list was made available at on Wednesday evening, with the Trotters not included.

Although Wanderers find themselves in a healthier position than they have in recent times, they must still comply with rules that were put in place prior to the takeover by Football Ventures (Whites) Limited in August 2019 or risk further punishments in the form of embargoes and/or points deductions.
