Bolton will host Championship opposition in the opening week of the season after they were paired with Barnsley in the first round of the Carabao Cup.
After missing out on promotion to the Premier League in the end-of-season play-offs in May, the Tykes will compete in the second-tier for a third consecutive year - meaning they enter the competition at the first stage, where they will look to better last season's progression to the third round.
Wanderers fell at the first hurdle last August, losing 2-1 at home to Bradford City in Ian Evatt's first game as manager, and they too will be looking for success having been eliminated at this stage in five of the last six campaigns.
The Trotters are unbeaten in 12 outings against Barnsley (W6 D6), last tasting defeat in an FA Cup third-round tie at Oakwell back in January 1998, although the contrasting fortunes of both clubs in recent times will see the visitors to the University of Bolton Stadium enter as the favourites.
Ties will be played in the week commencing August 9, 2021, with the winners booking themselves a second-round tie at the end of the month.
