Bolton will be without one of their brightest young prospects for much of next season after Finlay Lockett was ruled out for nine months with a ruptured anterior cruciate ligament.
Lockett, who became the second-youngest player in Wanderers history when he made his senior debut against Coventry City in August 2019 at the age of 16 years and 122 days, suffered the devastating blow whilst playing for the Trotters' under-18s last Saturday in a 3-1 victory over Oldham Athletic.
The 18-year-old has enjoyed a successful campaign as a second-year scholar and is understood to have agreed terms on a first professional contract at the University of Bolton Stadium - fending off Premier League interest from Wolverhampton Wanderers.
Despite receiving news of an impending lengthy lay-off, Lockett remains upbeat and took to social media to express his delight at ending the season as leading goalscorer for Mark Litherland's side.
"Happy to end the season (as) top goalscorer and to be offered my (first) professional contract," Lockett posted on Instagram.
"Gutted to say I'm going to be out for nine months as I've ruptured my ACL in my last game.
"I'll be back stronger."
