Kevin Davies says Mark Clattenburg was the worst referee he shared a field with and believes, at one point, things became personal between the pair.

Davies, whose 605 fouls ranks 2nd to only Gareth Barry's 633 in Premier League history, was booked seven times by Clattenburg over a number of years - with four of those coming in five fixtures overseen by the official in the 2009/10 campaign.

The former Wanderers captain admits things took a turn for the worse in February 2010, when he had a stoppage-time goal against Fulham disallowed in a game that would ultimately finish goalless - prompting an angry response that would see Davies fined by The FA.

Speaking to the All to Play For podcast, Davies said: "My worst referee was Clattenburg.

"He had it in for me and I felt it became a bit personal with him.

"I was always getting yellow cards and I think it stemmed from one of my first few games at Bolton.

"I was getting kicked up in the air. He eventually gave a foul to me and I was like 'wheyyyy!' and he gave me a yellow.

"Then I'd scored a late winner against Fulham - the good times had gone, this was Owen Coyle's era. I'd got above Brede Hengeland and scored but he disallowed it for a shove.

"It would have taken us up about six places. I kicked off about it after and I got sent to a hearing where I got a slap on the wrist and a £20,000 fine."

Despite running into trouble on the field, Davies admits the problems were left there and recalls a holiday in Spain where he bumped into the referee at a bar.

"I saw him in Linekers Bar in Marbella once. He was at the bar so I got him in a headlock!"
