Bolton Duo Removed from EFL Squad List

Jak Hickman and Jamie Mascoll look certain to leave Bolton at the end of the season, after they were left out of the club's revised EFL squad list.

Following the closure of the January transfer window, member clubs of the Championship, League One and League Two submitted which players would be eligible for league competition in the second half of the current campaign.

EFL rules state League Two clubs, including Wanderers, must adhere to a maximum squad capacity of 22 - eight of whom must be 'home grown' - although players under the age of 21 are exempt from such restrictions and are able to be put forward for selection.

Trotters boss Ian Evatt made a number of additions to his playing squad during the recent window - with Oladapo Afolayan, Zack Elbouzedi, Declan John, Kieran Lee, Marcus Maddison and MJ Williams all making the cut.

Ben Jackson and Lukas Jensen, who joined on loan from Huddersfield Town and Burnley, respectively, fall into the 'under-21' category and therefore remain eligible, as does fellow loanee Billy Crellin.

Ali Crawford and Muhammadu Faal, both of whom are spending time out on loan away from the University of Bolton Stadium, have been removed from the list, as have the aforementioned Hickman and Mascoll.

Hickman has made seven appearances during his debut season at Bolton and scored in his most recent outing - a 3-2 victory over Newcastle United U21 in the Papa John's Trophy back in November - while Mascoll, who also found the net in that game against the Magpies, has turned out nine times since arriving on a free transfer from Wycombe Wanderers.

Both are out of contract on June 30 and, it would appear, are set to seek pastures new in the summer when squad sizes decrease to a maximum of 20.

With only 21 players registered, long-term injury victim Liam Edwards could yet make a remarkable return to first-team action, although that remaining spot could also be utilised to bring in a free agent such as former Queens Park Rangers defender Joel Lynch - who has been training with the club in recent weeks.
