Ian Evatt thought Bolton played within themselves and has called for them to be more 'ruthless', despite beating Stevenage 1-0 at the University of Bolton Stadium.

Declan John scored the only goal on his first start for Wanderers, who recorded a first league double in two years and registered a first victory after having a man sent off for the first time since November 2012 in what was Dougie Freedman's first match as manager.

Speaking after the game, Evatt believes the second-half dismissal of MJ Williams could have proved costly and has urged his players to capitalise when they are on top by scoring more than one goal.

"I thought we played really well in the first half," Evatt told OfficialBWFC on YouTube.

"We played out from the back really well, created some opportunities and really looked like we were happy to stay in second gear after the goal.

"We have to be more ruthless and clinical. I think we could have to put ourselves in a better position and probably put the game to bed.

"When the game stays at 1-0, anything can happen as you've seen - with refereeing decisions, sending offs, set-pieces, the bounce of the ball in the box, deflections.

"We can't put ourselves in that position and we have to make sure we put the game to bed by having a more relentless, ruthless attitude.

"We're becoming harder to beat. We don't concede many chances from open play. A lot come from set-pieces but we worked hard Thursday and Friday, and I thought we defended really well."
