Marcus Maddison took to social media in the immediate aftermath of Bolton's draw with Morecambe, apologising to supporters for his debut red card.
Maddison, who was introduced as a substitute for Arthur Gnahoua just after the hour, was dismissed just 12 minutes later after referee Oliver Langford had adjudged the midfielder to have entered into a 50/50 challenge with his studs raised.
The 27-year-old became the first Wanderers player to see red on his debut since Akin Bulent in October 2002 and although he believes the tackle was fair, Maddison took the time to post his apologies on Twitter.
"I can only apologise to the boys and fans," he said.
"I'm not a malicious player and the fact I've got the ball first and he follows through on me baffles me more.
"It's cost us two points in a game we were comfortable in and I take the blame for that. Sorry, again."
