Peter Kioso has been recalled by Luton Town, who could yet loan him back to Bolton before the closure of the January transfer window.
The 21-year-old joined Wanderers in October and enjoyed a largely successful period at the University of Bolton Stadium, scoring three times in 14 appearances from a wing-back position.
He was sent off in his most recent outing - a 3-3 draw at Carlisle United on Boxing Day - but would have been available for selection ahead of Tuesday's fixture at Exeter City.
Trotters boss Ian Evatt had been hopeful of retaining the services of Kioso for the remainder of the campaign but says his Luton counterpart Nathan Jones had little option after losing players higher up the pecking order at Kenilworth Road.
Speaking to the Manchester Evening News, Evatt said: "I spoke to Nathan on Friday and he was more than happy for him to stay, but football changes and changes fast.
"One of their players has gone down with COVID. Then another one got injured and he's left with one.
"Hopefully if he becomes available again late in the window we're first in the queue."
Northampton Town have been linked with a move for Kioso, who may well be tempted by the opportunity to test himself at League One level, and Town boss Jones admits a decision on the player's future will be made in due course.
"He's had a real good loan up at Bolton and we're delighted with his progress," Jones told Luton Today.
"He might still go back out, he might still go back there, it's just we're just assessing him a little bit, getting him back involved with us for a few weeks and then going from there.
"He's done well, he's been looked after, we were very careful on the club we chose because we had a lot of interest in him.
"We kept him around for a long period, but we kept Bolton there because we believed it would be a good loan for him.
"I know certain people there and the new manager going in has a good record, so we're delighted that he was looked after and he enjoyed it.
"It's not beyond the realms that he'll go back out there, but right now he's back involved in our fold and that's what always was the plan."
