Bolton have completed their first signing of the January transfer window, with Declan John joining on loan from Swansea City for the remainder of the campaign.

John, who recently entered the final six months of his contract at the Liberty Stadium, has yet to feature for the Swans this season and hasn't played competitively since January 2020.

With Liam Gordon on loan at Dagenham & Redbridge, John, who operates primarily as a left wing-back, has been identified as a potential solution to a problem position which has seen the likes of Harry Brockbank and Gethin Jones utilised with mixed success in recent months.

Speaking to about his switch to the University of Bolton Stadium, the 25-year-old said: "It's good to be back around a first team environment.

"I've been training with the under 23s at Swansea and haven't had much game time but I'm looking forward to being here and getting involved in some games.

"The main thing for me is to just come here and play. I'm at an age now where I just need to be playing two games a week, three games a week, it doesn't matter - I just need to be playing."

Capped seven times by Wales, John progressed through the academy system at Cardiff City before making his senior debut in August 2012.

He would spend a further five years with the Bluebirds - taking in loan spells at Barnsley, Chesterfield and Rangers - before making a permanent move to Ibrox in December 2017.

Following the appointment of Steven Gerrard as manager the following summer, John soon found himself out of favour and was on the move once again where he signed a three-year deal at Swansea.

Subject to international clearance, John is expected to be available for Bolton's trip to Exeter City on January 12.
