Wanderers slipped to a third consecutive home defeat in the fourth tier for the first time, as George Francomb scored the only goal in the opening fixture of 2021 at the University of Bolton Stadium.
Both teams struck the woodwork, while the Trotters ended the game with 10 men after Reiss Greenidge was sent off for a second bookable offence.
