Ivan Klasnic has been awarded €4million (£3.6million) in compensation after successfully suing former club Werder Bremen over kidney failure he had suffered in 2007.

Klasnic, who would go on to spend three years at Bolton between 2009 and 2012, had previously been awarded a measly sum of just £90,000 at the Bremen Regional Court but opted to take the matter to the Higher Regional Court to further his case against former club doctors Gotz Dimanski and Manja Guha.

Acting on behalf of the former player, lawyer Matthias Teichner alleged high doses of painkilling medication prescribed by the duo had heavily contributed towards Klasnic's kidney damage and that the 40-year-old was entitled to a financial package which would take into account his loss of earnings, suffering and health restrictions that would remain with him for life.

Klasnic, who refrained from filing criminal charges against the doctors, declined to comment following the insurance payout, but Teichner admitted the closure of the case would provide the Croat with the justive he deserves.

"No money in the world can make up for the considerable and permanent damage to my client's health [but this is] more suitable to create a feeling of justice.

"At least the doctors were now ready to express their regret about the incidents. In my opinion, this was long overdue."
