Former Bolton defender Joe Bunney has found himself a new club, joining non-league Matlock Town on a non-contract basis.

Bunney moved to Wanderers on a free transfer from Northampton Town in September 2019 but saw his stay at the University of Bolton Stadium end after a solitary season which had been impacted by a serious car accident, before being curtailed because of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Despite training with the Trotters over pre-season, the 27-year-old failed to earn a new deal but has now found a route back into football in the Northern Premier League - three tiers below his former employers.

Bunney, who made his Matlock debut in a 1-0 victory at South Shields on Saturday, has been drafted in as a forward by manager Paul Phillips, who believes the player's attitude and versatility will prove invaluable for a club in the seventh tier.

"He's a massive signing for us," Phillips told

"When you look at where he's played he'll bring professionalism in with him and also add competition for places.

"He can play as a centre forward where we see him operating for us, or as a left winger or left back.

"Having played in the league, I know he's anxious to get back there.

"He's recognised what we're wanting to achieve here he wants to do the best he can for the club and hasn't come for the money.

"I'm delighted to have him on board."
