Ian Evatt says his decision to substitute both Jak Hickman and Jamie Mascoll against Grimsby Town was because neither had played well enough and not because of injury.

Hickman, drafted back into the team in place of the injured Gethin Jones, was replaced midway through the second half at the University of Bolton Stadium, while Mascoll was replaced by Liam Gordon with a little under 15 minutes to play.

Supporters watching on Wanderers' iFollow stream took to social media to express their surprise at both changes - Hickman, in particular - but when quizzed for his reasons behind the alterations Evatt admitted their delivery in the final third frustrated him one too many times.

"I decided to change because I was disappointed with both of their deliveries," Evatt told the Manchester Evening News.

"Both Jamie (Mascoll) and (Jak) Hickman and they both had enough opportunities to get the ball in the right areas.

"We work on it in training and we've seen it in training. However, today they hit the first man too often and we were making fundamental errors in that final third so we decided to change it."
