Anthony Backhouse will referee Tuesday's EFL Trophy group fixture between Bolton and Crewe Alexandra at the University of Bolton Stadium.

Wanderers go into the game on the back of a 2-1 defeat at home to Bradford City on Saturday, while Alex were beaten by the same scoreline by Lincoln City - meaning both clubs were knocked out of the Carabao Cup at the first-round stage.

Backhouse, who will take charge of the game, has officiated one match so far this season, which took place the previous Saturday - August 29 - as Blackburn Rovers began their campaign with a 3-2 victory over Doncaster Rovers.

The Cumbria official brandished four yellow cards at Ewood Park, three of which went to members of the losing side.

The last time Backhouse took charge of a Wanderers fixture was in November 2019, when they were beaten 7-1 by Accrington Stanley in a League One clash at the Wham Stadium. Two players entered the book that afternoon, while Josh Earl was dismissed for the visiting Trotters.

He last oversaw a Crewe fixture in September 2019, when they were beaten 3-1 by Burton Albion in a Leasing.com Trophy tie at the Alexandra Stadium. Three players were cautioned that evening, including Alex midfielder Charlie Kirk.

Below is the full set of officials for Tuesday's game between Bolton and Crewe:
