Sunderland have completed the signing of Remi Matthews, who had been available as a free agent following his departure from Bolton.

Matthews has signed a 12-month contract with the Black Cats and links up with former Wanderers manager Phil Parkinson at the Stadium of Light, becoming their fourth signing of the summer transfer window.

The 26-year-old made 58 appearances during a two-year spell with the Trotters which was marred by off-field difficulties and back-to-back relegations on it.

Following his official unveiling, Matthews took to social media to thank those who had supported him over the previous two campaigns.

"I want to thank everyone associated with Bolton Wanderers for the last two years," Matthews posted on Twitter.

"I am sorry it wasn't a successful period but I enjoyed my time and I hope success returns to your wonderful football club.

"I will always be following."
