Reports on Monday evening indicate at least three applicants have been interviewed for the vacant managerial post at Bolton.

With Keith Hill's contract due to expire on June 30 and the club recently confirming a new deal would not be in the offing, Wanderers officials are looking to have a new man in position as soon as reasonably possible to maximise browsing time in the free agent and loan markets ahead of next season - which is likely to begin in September.

Lee, who made 199 appearances for the Trotters between 1992 and 1997, has held a coaching role in the academy and development set-ups since 2008 and has made no secret of his desire to take on the senior post on a number of occasions.

It is understood the 52-year-old is being considered, along with former Republic of Ireland international Steven Reid and ex-Grimsby Town boss Michael Jolley.

Reid enjoyed success with Millwall, Blackburn Rovers and West Bromwich Albion, amonst others, during a 17-year playing career and has held first-team coaching roles at Reading and Crystal Palace since retiring in 2015. He currently works as an assistant coach for the Scottish national team.

Jolley, meanwhile, has been out of work since leaving Grimsby last November, when it was revealed he had become involved in an 'expletive-laden confrontation' with a BBC journalist.

Speculation linking Southend United boss Sol Campbell with a move to the University of Bolton Stadium appears to be wide of the mark, at least at this stage, although moves for Ian Evatt, Ryan Lowe and former player Sam Ricketts are being considered.
