Bolton have confirmed James Weir has left the club after an agreement was reached to cancel his contract by mutual consent.

Weir, who joined Wanderers in August following his departure from Hull City, began the campaign as a regular feature in midfield but struggled for game time following Keith Hill's appointment as manager.

The 24-year-old was often criticised by the Trotters boss and was even substituted twice before half-time - first in a 6-1 defeat at Rotherham United in September, as well as a Trophy victory over Manchester City U21 back in October.

Only five of Weir's 12 appearances for Bolton arrived under the current management, with his final outing coming on New Year's Day in a 4-3 home defeat at the hands of Burton Albion.
