Bolton conceded three times in the final five minutes as Lincoln City took advantage of a late Wanderers collapse to win 5-1 at the LNER Stadium.

The Imps took an early lead when Harry Anderson broken the deadlock inside seven minutes - one which they would take into the break - but the visitors drew level two minutes after the restart as Ronan Darcy netted his first league goal following a knockdown from Daryl Murphy.

Tyler Walker restored the hosts' advantage just after the hour, before Joe Morrell and a brace from substitute John Akinde saw Michael Appleton's side run away with the points with a late flurry.

Keith Hill made two changes to the Bolton side that tasted defeat at Rochdale on Saturday. Luke Murphy returned from suspension to replace Sonny Graham in midfield, while Liam Edwards started at left-back following Adam Chicksen's release at the end of his short-term contract.

Wanderers began brightly, with Joe Dodoo forcing Josh Vickers into an early save, but they fell behind inside seven minutes as Lincoln took the lead with their first attack of the game.

After bursting away from Josh Emmanuel down the Imps' left-hand side, Harry Toffolo's cross was inch perfect for Anderson to head past Matthews from close range to make it 1-0.

Matthews tipped a free-kick from Jorge Grant over the top as the hosts looked to extend their advantage on 19 minutes, shortly before Jake Hesketh was denied a certain goal by an outstanding sliding challenge from Toto Nsiala.

A first-half devoid of chances in either penalty area almost ended with another goal, but Matthews reacted well to save from Tyler Walker after the one-time Wanderers loanee had dispossessed Luke Murphy in central midfield.

There was one change as the players returned for the second period, with Chris O'Grady on in place of Yoan Zouma, who appeared to take a knock late in the first-half. O'Grady took up a place in attack, with Dennis Politic dropping into midfield and Ethan Hamilton shifting to left-back.

The change appeared baffling but Bolton were level within two minutes of play resuming, as a cross from Emmanuel was knocked down by Daryl Murphy and Darcy lashed home on the half-volley for the first league goal of his senior career.

Lincoln thought they had restored their lead on 59 minutes, only for Walker to have a goal ruled out for offside, but the one-time Wanderers loanee made no mistake two minutes later as he capitalised on some slack defending to fire past Matthews from 25 yards.

Edwards headed wide from a Hamilton corner midway through the half, moments before Grant twice spurned opportunities to make it 3-1 to the home side.

Morrell and Grant failed to test Matthews as the clock ticked into the final 15 minutes, while Politic took down a ball from Hamilton before shooting just over the crossbar at the other end.

Politic then turned provider for Dodoo, whose looping header was comfortable for Vickers, but the game would run away from Bolton in the latter stages as Lincoln struck three times in the space of just five minutes.

First, Morrell was given the freedom of Wanderers' final third - advancing 20 yards without a challenge, playing a one-two before slotting past Matthews from just inside the box.

Then, a little over a minute later, Akinde found the top corner to make it 4-1 and he completed the scoring in the final minute, heading in a cross from substitute Aaron Lewis.

Defeat means Bolton once again waste the chance to move off the foot of the League One table. They remain three points behind Southend United with two games in hand, but more importantly languish 17 from safety with 21 games to play.

Hill's side return to home soil on Saturday, with play-off chasing Portsmouth the visitors to the University of Bolton Stadium.
