Bolton could face a fight to retain the services of Thibaud Verlinden, after he was recalled by Stoke City for their FA Cup third-round tie at Brentford.

Verlinden joined Wanderers on the final day of the summer transfer window and impressed during his stay at the University of Bolton Stadium - scoring three times in 17 appearances - but has returned to the Potters after his half-season loan came to an end.

Stoke have found themselves under new management in recent months and Michael O'Neill is prepared to take a look at the talent of the 20-year-old before making a decision on his immediate future.

Verlinden featured as a substitute for City back in August and with FIFA rules dictating players can only represent a maximum of two clubs in any one season, the Belgium youth international will now either remain with his parent club or spend the second half of the campaign back with Keith Hill's side.

"I have been informed that Stoke are recalling Thibaud for the FA Cup," Hill told The Bolton News. "I am disappointed, of course, but I sort of knew that I wasn't in control.

"It is the same with Liam Bridcutt. It isn't my player so it isn't my say.

"We brought them in, gave them a home, they have done reasonably well, but they are owned by other clubs. Players find it hard to decide.

"It is something out of my control but we have to address it as and when it happens. It will be difficult but it is not insurmountable."
