Bolton manager Keith Hill felt referee Michael Salisbury had no option but to issue a red card to Jason Lowe in Sunday's draw with Shrewsbury Town.
With the game level at 1-1, Lowe was dismissed shortly before the hour at the University of Bolton Stadium for a two-footed challenge on Oliver Norburn.
Lowe will miss upcoming fixtures against Burton Albion, Rochdale and Lincoln City as a result of his sending off, with Hill left cursing a double blow after Liam Bridcutt picked up a hamstring injury in the same game.
"The referee had no other choice to make," Hill told OfficialBWFC on YouTube. "It's a red card.
"I've not watched it back but looking at it from the side, I wasn't expecting anything else except red.
"It looks as though he's gone over the top. There's no malice, he's trying to go for the ball, but he's got the timing wrong.
"The double-whammy is Liam Bridcutt (injured) and Jason Lowe being out."
