Bolton could move off the bottom of the League One table on Boxing Day, when they hit the road for the final time this decade with a trip to Sunderland.

Wanderers, who have propped up the division since Bury's expulsion from the EFL in August, beat Southend United on Saturday to move to within two points of the Shrimpers in their unlikely quest to avoid relegation this campaign.

Keith Hill's side have an unenviable return of just three points from their eight away outings in 2019/20, with a solitary victory at Bristol Rovers back in October bringing two of their four goals to date.

The Wanderers boss knows form away from the University of Bolton Stadium must improve if his team are to have any chance of avoiding a drop into the fourth tier, starting with a game against a Black Cats side now managed by former Trotters chief Phil Parkinson.

Hill is likely to use every available member of his playing squad over the coming week and has been boosted by the return to fitness of names such as Liam Edwards and Adam Chicksen.

Edwards hasn't featured since August but was an unused substitute against Southend last time out, while Chicksen has recovered from illness and could return at left-back at the expense of Josh Earl, who could alternatively move into central defence ahead of Liam Bridcutt.

Harry Brockbank is closing in on a return of his own after recently stepping up his training programme, while Jack Hobbs and Connor Hall continue to be monitored for ongoing problems.

Joe Bunney, Will Buckley, Ali Crawford and Eddie Brown are definitely out through injury but there is a place for midfielder Luke Murphy, whose girlfriend gave birth to a baby girl this past Sunday.
