Bolton have appointed Farnworth-born Mike Pollitt to the role of goalkeeping coach, succeeding Lee Butler who departed for Sunderland in November.

Pollitt, best known for his time as a player at Wigan Athletic between 2005 and 2014, has already reported for duty with Wanderers, a club he says he was 'gutted' never to have played for as a lifelong supporter.

The 47-year-old is tasked with pushing the potential of first-choice stopper Remi Matthews at the University of Bolton Stadium, as well as bringing through youth prospects such as Matthew Alexander and Luke Hutchinson.

"I grew up in the town, played in the Bolton Boys Federation and watched Bolton Wanderers home and away," Pollitt told bwfc.co.uk.

"Phil Neal even came around to my house when I was 12/13 but I ended up signing for Manchester United when I left school.

"I was gutted that I was never able to play for Bolton but I had some enjoyable moments playing against them throughout the years.

"When Keith and David asked me to come to the club I had no hesitation. It's taken me over 30 years to get here but I'm delighted that I'm now part of the staff."

Pollitt had been on the backroom staff at Rotherham United prior to his switch to Lostock and he continued his dialogue with the Millers' official website.

"Had it been any other club, I wouldn't have dreamed of going but obviously Bolton is my hometown and I have supported them since I was a lad. I just couldn't turn it down.

"I spoke to Warney (Rotherham manager Paul Warne) and it was a really hard conversation when I told him but he totally understood my decision. I've known him for a long time as a friend and now a work colleague.

"We text each other to tell the other how much time we have for each other and we'll miss working with one another every day but the lure of coming to Bolton, where I have always wanted to work even in my playing days, was just too much."
