Bolton boss Keith Hill refused to pin blame on his side's defeat at Accrington Stanley on the dismissal of Josh Earl.

With just 13 minutes played and Wanderers leading 1-0, Earl was sent off by match referee Anthony Backhouse for a professional foul which resulted in Stanley also being awarded a penalty - which was successfully converted by Colby Bishop.

The Trotters would go on to collapse at the Wham Stadium, with a 7-1 defeat being their heaviest-ever in the third-tier, but Hill believes his team's display wasn't good enough even in the early stages.

"I don't believe he should have been sent off," Hill told OfficialBWFC on YouTube. "I think it was harsh.

"It was a difficult decision presented to the referee and I believe he got it wrong.

"But the performance leading into that red card and penalty wasn't good enough and it wasn't good enough afterwards, even though we had 10 men.

"It should have been better from a courageous and mental point of view, with respect to using our brains.

"We'll have to make sure we take the punches, roll with them, come out fighting again with a better spirit and certainly with a better mentality and attitude than we've shown today."
