Keith Hill has revealed his decision to substitute James Weir in Bolton's victory over Manchester City U21 was due to the player's poor performance.

Weir was replaced by Sonny Graham with 37 minutes played at the University of Bolton Stadium, with the like-for-like nature of the change leaving supporters questioning whether the 24-year-old had sustained an injury.

Speaking after the game, however, Hill admitted the clock has no bearing on his decisions as a manager and he will have no qualms in making similar alterations in future.

"These games are important to me," Hill told The Bolton News. "My little boy is here and it's important to him, it's important to my wife, it's my livelihood. You are representing me out on that pitch.

"If your performance isn't good enough 10 minutes in or 20 minutes in, or even if you come on as a sub, you'll be sub-subbed. It's as simple as that.

"I can't stand there smiling on the side of the pitch watching people make mistake after mistake and accepting it.

"There are certain standards that have to be set and that's why I make those decisions."
