Phil Parkinson has returned to football management, having been appointed boss at League One promotion hopefuls Sunderland.

Parkinson, who left Bolton in August after a little over three years in charge, has signed a two-and-a-half year deal at the Stadium of Light, where he will succeed Jack Ross following his dismissal on October 8.

Steve Parkin will join Parkinson as assistant manager, while a number of backroom staff at the University of Bolton Stadium have been heavily tipped to follow suit should official approaches be made over the coming weeks.

"It is both a privilege and immense responsibility to be appointed manager of this great club," Parkinson told

"I've been in football a long time now, and Sunderland's immense history, the passion of its fanbase and its wonderful facilities are legendary within the game.

"It's now up to me to build on the work of my predecessor and deliver the success the fans are so desperate for.

"This is a good squad of players, and I relish the challenge of working with them to achieve our goal of promotion from League One."

Parkinson will come up against Bolton for the first time since his departure on Boxing Day, when Wanderers travel to the Stadium of Light for a league clash. This season's reverse fixture ended in a 1-1 draw.
