The stark reality of Bolton's plight was there for all to see as they opened their pre-season schedule with a 1-0 defeat at York City.

Wanderers, directed by Julian Darby and Nicky Spooner from the sidelines, with manager Phil Parkinson watching on from the stands, gave minutes to 23 players at Bootham Crescent on an afternoon where Alex Kempster's first-half strike settled affairs.

Wanderers' off-field problems have been heavily documented in recent times, with just eight of their 13 registered senior and third-year scholars having made a senior appearance for the club.

Of those, only two were named on the teamsheet, with Connor Hall and Ronan Darcy having accumulated 90 minutes between them over the course of a combined three outings.

Familiar names in the form of Yoan Zouma, Jordan Boon and Dennis Politic were named in the starting line-up, but it was the substitutes' bench that sparked pre-match debate on social media - with the majority drafted in from the club's under-16 and 17 squads.

Once the action got underway, it was York who quickly took control. Despite finding themselves three leagues below the Trotters, the toll of senior football began to show.

Indeed, it took just four minutes for the hosts to fashion a first attempt on goal as Andy Bond tried his luck from the edge of the box but saw his shot roll straight into the waiting arms of goalkeeper Matt Alexander.

Bond tried again on 11 minutes, with a long-range attempt forcing a save from Alexander, who gathered the ball at the second attempt.

Liam Smith drilled wide moments later, before a stoppage in play was granted to allow Alexander to receive treatment after he collided with a number of players in preventing a corner from heading into the net.

At this point, Alexander was proving to be the star of the show. Next, he spread himself well to deny Kempster in a one-on-one situation, only to be beaten on the half-hour as York's pressure was rewarded with the opening goal.

In attempting to send the ball back to his goalkeeper, Boon's header lacked power and allowed Kempster to steal in unmarked to send the ball into the unguarded net.

Bolton registered their first effort on goal with 35 minutes played, with Politic sending a 25-yard free-kick straight into the arms of City goalkeeper Ryan Whitley.

At the other end, Alexander raced off his line to thwart Bond once more, before the final act of the half saw a goalbound strike from Eddie Brown strike an arm inside the York penalty area - only for appeals to be turned down by the match officials.

With the visitors back out for the start of the second period, only Zouma and Boon remained as the Trotters made nine changes, while York made three substitutions of their own.

Bolton began well and almost got back on level terms within two minutes of the restart, with Finlay Lockett and Myles Edmondson both getting shots in on Whitley's goal.

York should have doubled their advantage on 52 minutes, with substitute Kieran Green finding himself with the goal at his mercy. However, he got his shot from eight yards horribly wrong, with the ball flying high and wide of Luke Hutchinson's target.

Adam Senior came close to levelling for Wanderers midway through the half, only to see a looping header fly narrowly over the top.

Kempster, who opened the scoring in the opening period, should have added a second with 20 minutes to play, powering beyond a number of defender before shooting straight at Hutchinson.

Nathan Dyer and Kempster saw chances to make it 2-0 come and go inside the final quarter-hour, but Bolton's lack of attacking threat meant the Minstermen were good value for what would ultimately prove to be a 1-0 success.

Bolton will have five days to recover ahead of their next pre-season friendly. They travel to Chester FC on Friday.
