Reports on Tuesday evening suggest Salford City are lining up an ambitious swoop for out-of-contract Bolton defender David Wheater.
The Ammies, who will be playing in the EFL for the first time in their history this upcoming season, have recruited well in the off-season and currently have ex-Wanderers duo Tom Walker and Oscar Threlkeld amongst the ranks at Moor Lane.
The League Two side had been linked with a move for Josh Vela earlier in the summer but it is Wheater who appears more likely to link up with his former colleagues, with manager Graham Alexander setting sights a little higher than survival once the new campaign begins in August.
Wheater spent last week on trial with Scottish Premiership side Kilmarnock and featured in their pre-season friendly against Dinamo Bucharest, in which they were beaten 3-0.
