Luca Connell has called time on his stay at Bolton by signing a four-year contract with Scottish Premiership champions Celtic.

Connell, who had been with Wanderers since the age of nine, made 12 appearances for the club's first-team last season as they were relegated to League One and attracted interest from a host of clubs throughout the United Kingdom.

The Trotters' failure to tie the 18-year-old to a professional contract severely hindered their chances of retaining the midfielder's services and it is understood a development fee in the region of £350,000 proved enough to force a move - just 24 hours after Connell saw a formal resignation request turned down by administrators at the University of Bolton Stadium.

Administrators recognised they had been placed in an impossible position, with a spokesperson saying: "We took legal advice once Luca submitted his notice of termination.

"However, the discrepancy in the regulations between England and Scotland meant we had no option but to accept the situation.

"To their credit, Celtic recognised that and have agreed to pay substantially more than the financial obligations in Luca's contract."
