Bolton will make the short journey to Rochdale in August, after the clubs were paired together in the first round of the Carabao Cup.

The Lancashire rivals, who are due to clash in league action at the University of Bolton Stadium on October 19, will face off at Spotland on August 14 for what will be their first meeting since February 2017 - when Mark Beevers scored the only goal for Wanderers in a League One fixture.

The clubs have been drawn together on three previous occasions in the EFL Cup, with the Trotters emerging victorious in each instance.

In August 1969, John Byrom netted a hat-trick as Nat Lofthouse's side ran out 6-3 winners in a first-round tie at Burnden Park, while Stuart Lee scored a brace en route to a 4-0 victory at Spotland in a second-round tie four years later.

Then, in August 1989, Bolton overcame a 2-1 first-leg defeat to win 5-1 at Burnden Park, sealing a 6-3 aggregate success that saw them advance through to round two of the competition.
