Charlton Athletic have made an initial approach to Ben Amos, who will be available on a free transfer when his contract at Bolton expires on June 30.
Amos, who impressed during a spell on loan with Wanderers in 2014/15, made his move from Manchester United permanent when his deal at Old Trafford came to an end that summer, but hasn't played for the club since August 2016 after falling out of favour at the University of Bolton Stadium.
A combination of the 29-year-old's poor form and unsustainable wage has seen him shipped out on loan deals with Cardiff City, Charlton and Millwall over the past three years, and it would appear the Addicks are in pole position to capture his signature with the offer of Championship football.
Manager Lee Bowyer admits discussions are at an early stage, but he would be interested in seeing Amos return to The Valley if the two parties can come to an agreement on a reduced salary.
"Ben is one of the ones we are trying to work on," Bowyer told the South London Press. "But he was on a hell of a lot of money, so it's just whether he is prepared to go down to what we are going to offer.
"We're just trying to persuade him - he did a great job for us before.
"He loved it here at the club and the fans took to him.
"He has the experience and has played in the division. He knows what we're like as a club. It is the perfect fit. We do need some experienced players in that division, for sure.
"Ben is a confidence player. Ben had a rocky start to the season with us and then he got better and better as the season went on."
